English Summary/英文概要： The story follows three first-person perspectives: mother JULIA, her 18-year-old daughter HALEY and her 10-year-old daughter IZZY two months after Haley caused a car crash that resulted in the death of her 16-year-old sister Caitlin. Each narrative has a distinct voice and the three weave together beautifully to portray a broken, but healing, family.
Blaming herself for her sister’s death, Haley begins to rebel and self-destruct, but trapped in her own sadness, Julia doesn’t even notice until Haley is expelled from school and she realizes that Haley has been cutting herself. Finally propelled out of her own depression, Julia makes the impromptu decision to take Haley and Izzy on a cross-country road trip. While it may seem rash, the forced closeness brings the women out of their shells and starts to bring back their relationship.
What I love most about JULIA’S DAUGHTERS is how honest and relatable the voices are. While it shows a family in the midst of tragedy, it does have its real-life moments of levity that keep the momentum and believability going (like Izzy sneaking their cat, Mr. Cat, onto the trip with them).
